Ledyard Historical Society Programs and Events

The Ledyard Historical Society stays very busy, with many programs and events run throughout the year. Below are some important dates and events to remember:

Restoring Samuel Huntington's Tomb, October 16, 2009

Samuel Huntington, a self educated man, became a signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the 2nd Continental Congress (when the Articles of Confederation were signed into law, identifying this country as the United States) and Governor of Connecticut. He died in 1796 and his remains were interred along side his wife’s in the Huntington Tomb located in the Old Norwichtown Burial Grounds. In the fall of 2003 the Huntington Tomb had fallen into a sad state of disrepair when members of the Norwich Historical Society voted to undertake a restoration program. Before the brick work began, state archaeologist Nick Bellantoni and his team carefully removed the remains, documenting every detail. Over the next four weeks the tomb was restored to its original state and on November 24, 2003 a re-interment ceremony was held for the remains of Samuel and Martha Huntington and the tomb was resealed.

Through slides and video, local historian David Oat will discuss the life of Samuel Huntington and the Norwich Historical Society’s restoration project. This presentation will take place at out autumn meeting, October 16th.

Due to scheduling conflicts the meeting will be held at the Bill Library meeting room. The program will commence following a brief business meeting at 7:30 PM. The Ledyard Bill Library is located at 718 Colonel Ledyard Highway, adjacent to the Congregational Church. The public is invited to the presentation, which will be followed by refreshments. Come to hear this interesting program and bring a friend.
